FICTILIS seeks submissions of black and white xerographic work of all types and styles. (“Xerography” is a fancy word for photocopying. “10-22-38 Astoria” was the first text/image ever produced using this technology*.) Preferred submissions are black and white on 8-1/2″ x 11″ ( US letter size) text weight paper. There is no submission fee and no limit on the number of submissions (though each submission should be unique). Entries should be mailed (with applicant’s name and contact information on back of each) to the following address:

Mail entries are preferred, but work may also be submitted as attachments using our submissions form (limit 3 attachments per submission) but all attachments should be formatted for 8 1/2″x11″ black-and-white printing and should have been produced using a xerographic process.

All work will be displayed without attribution, though exhibition print/web materials will feature a list of contributors. Visitors to the exhibition will have the option to 1) make one free copy of anything they bring in, using our onsite machines; 2) purchase for $1 a copy of anything they see on the walls; 3) purchase for $5 the original of anything they see on the walls, provided they replace it with a copy; or 4) purchase the original for $10, without replacing it. $1 sales go to FICTILIS. $5 sales are split 50/50 FICTILIS/Artist. $10 sales go entirely to Artist. A curated selection of Seattle’s finest contemporary drawing.

Remarkably, artists were selected by the unjaundiced eye and not chosen because of their reputation in either the fine art or cartoon art world, ahem.

Artwork was chosen by proximity, spiritual connection and contribution to the Northwest Tradition as pioneered by the likes of Morris Graves, Mark Toby, Peter Bagge and Jim Woodring.

Remarkably (yes, again), the artwork featured in SKID ROAD TO FLOATING WORLD is a mixed miasma of drone drawing, figure drawing, pattern cartooning, metamorphic automatism, cartography, illustration, totem drawing and good ole rain soaked mysticism.

We will also have advance copies of Jim Woodring’s new graphic novel, CONGRESS OF THE ANIMALS, available for sale.

(herein lies my report on the olympia comics festival 2011)

quick hour to oly

i blinked and we were there

nutritional burgers at jack in the mctaco

more coffee please

thanks for the free parking

we brought our stuff into the show and set up

routine

i can never drink enough water at these things

regrets about the morning burgers

like most shows it was a slow start

surveying the room i sensed the pma had been brought

i know i was bringing it

i was still smelling the foul fumes from last year

last year was dismal

depressing

brutal

by the first hour there was a nice murmuring buzz and sneaker squeak serenade from all the foot traffic

folks seemed to be digging the mix of mini comics, undergrounds and zines i had to offer

yes! people were buying zines at a comic show (scandalous)

talking talking talking

and selling stuff

i talked horse

no pit stops just a couple of water breaks

i was busy busy

i managed to get out from behind the table one and a half times and checked out only half the show

in real life i'm not one of those people that plays dog and has to sniff other dogs

but at these shows i like to sniff

so i'm wistful about the lack of odor i took in

blink

the show's over

it was a short show

a lil guy

only four and half hours

but i was beat from all the jawing

i was also hungry

quick tally of sales surprised me and more than made up for last years loss

before expenses i took in two hundred and fifty bucks

figger fifty bucks for table / gas / food / coffee

figger minus a hundred for what i pay out for merch

so i made around a hundred bucks in four and a half hours

it'd be cool if i could average that at other shows

success

i had lots of fun

met cool new folks

and made a little scratch so i can re-up my depleted stock and buy new stuff for the hill

a gaggle of us went to darby's to get some eats

i used to work at darby's

it was nice to be back

new owners but still good eaten (i recommend the rueben)

when i worked there i'd show up early in the morn after working graveyard shift at toys r us

after walking in the door and taking my coat off

someone would hand me a mimosa and a spliff and away we'd go

i was the dishwasher

(when i told this to dylan he sed being a dishwasher is the common bond between most cartoonists (that and alcoholism))

i'd wash those dishes buzzed and sleep depped until three when

i'd then go to the spar bar and continue drinking and dance to the juke box until

i had to go back to toys r us and work another graveyard shift

and then i'd go home and take a shower

and then go to darby's to drink mimosas, smoke a lil sweat and wash dishes until three

and then go drink a bunch and finally crash broken

up for three days of obliteration...

it was fun to reminisce with friends about that youthful destructive behavior

but i'm glad i can be energetic and regenerative with my actions today

is there inherent worth in the hand made?

or what is meaning?

what is right or wrong with being creative because one is feeling creative?

what could be more meaningful?

"art for art sake"

creativity and hand made art, in my opinion, are a humble pairing of beauty and positive energy.

i much prefer human inspiration finding hand made artistic expression as opposed to the destructive organization associated with governments and corporations exerting their reach.

there seems to be an aesthetic authority, an aura, attached to hand made art.

i am almost always interested in folk expression...

(maybe "folk art" is a better more popular term than "hand made art" but there seems to be unnecessary baggage with "folk art" leading me from a broader, richer and more mysterious path.)

...hand made art, by it's nature, acts as a container and distributor of energy from the hands of the maker to the hands of the reader (don't forget reading is making too).

i typically find containers of human idiosyncrasy almost as beautiful as nature.

here's my "dear diary" for the stump-ump show that jest happened

SAT

kelly, max and meself were on the road by 5:30 sat morn
ridiculously early
driving was good and grey and it was raining upsidedown
pit stopped in chehalis for pits and coffee and chow
back on the road in no time to no rain
made port town in 2 hrs and 45 mins
bought coffee at burgerville
bleary eyed we stumbled our way into the show
eroyn showed up as the show started
great sense of humor
back to stumbling
seeing ol friends and stumbling threw conversations
yuk yuks

left the show and found the saddest sandwich in the world
the sandwich was so sad its name was sadwich
drizzled my way back to the show
coffee coffee coffee

after the show we scarfed with 200 people at a long table at a greek or middle eastern chow house
nicolas the 2nd i think it was called
couldn't wait to git me kabobs
while we ate we jawed about economic forecasting, upcoming pdx zine symposium, beefheart vs zappa, france, health and "the comics ghetto"
was surprised to hear "the comics ghetto"
not sure if its mention was only tied to the stumptown show or world at large
hard to stomach considering the abundance of comics support and broadcast in roseland
harder to stomach considering what an asinine term "the comics ghetto" is
what do these nice people want?
"the comics suburbs"?
talk about silver spoons
after nicolas the 2nd some of us went to downtown backscratch where some guitar music was being guitared
met up with tony and caught up while he ate a burger and i drank more coffee
tony hooked me up with 2 cool records (sublime frequencies and the sun city girls)
nize!

the night wore thin and i drove to chris and mindy's to zzzzz
chris and i could've talked until 4 in the morn like last year but we cut it short round 2
always good convo with chris
we talked about the micro/macro perception of "the comics ghetto" and swapped notes on the energy import/export of cartoon characters
zzzzz

SUN

during the night i had a pawful of visits from gertrude the cat
gertrude is the loudest cat west of the mississippi
one point during the night i woke to what felt like a crazy bug crawling on my face
i hit the light and
ME-EE-EOWR!!!
gertrude and i were snout to snout and she was staring me down
letting me know i was in her spot
i petted her and she nestled

in the morn woke up rested from a good snooze to the sound of some ol jazz music
chris was doing his morning stretches
mindy graciously made a pot of joe for me (my morning stretches)
mindy and i gabbed about public schools and teaching...
been thinking a lot about this stuff lately…
about my public school experience…
sometimes i wish i'd dropped out or taken the ged early
school for me was a lesson in how to get by with a minimum of (institutional) learning and how to bide my time
and drawing and writing was a way to occupy that biding
so was reading and cutting class to check out the books in the library
i'm happy to know mindy's teaching
before we left the house chris told me johnny ryan had won a stumppump award for best lettering
we both laughed for some reason

made it to the table just as the doors were opening and just as kelly and max discovered they couldn't find their table money
they quickly surmised the $ was still at the hotel where they'd already checked out
kelly split for the hotel to try and retrieve the $
bout half hour later kelly came back
the damn hotel was stonewalling her
so max and her went back to the hotel to raise a ruckus
bout 10 min later eroyn shows up and tells me her car was broken into
smashed the window to nothing and took her bag
what the hell!?
portland was trying to kick our ass
maybe 2 hours later kelly and max came back to the show victorious
they raised hell until the hotel "found" their money behind a stained couch
apparently max's rancor was such that it caused the hotel manager to leave premise

the day went as many of these days do
we tore down our table right quick and left to hit the road home
we stopped in kalama to find happy sandwiches and free coffee
during the drive home we were washed with beautiful sky and clouds slowly transforming and revealing hidden colors
we pit stopped in oly an old home of mine
round tacoma we discussed the whys and hows of seeking feedback about ones art
i was effusively pushing for truthful constructive criticism
must've been the coffee

dropped kelly and max at their place round 10
helped carry their stuff into their apartment which felt warm and welcoming
on my way home i stopped at the used bookstore where max had seen an owen plummer zine
he didn't pick it up because it had a stain on it
"i have a rule about buying things with stains on em" says max
i checked but the plummer had already been got
i then went to the old book section and flipped threw an old copy of pilgrim's progress

finally home i flopped on my bed tired
but not too tired to stay up and read some of the stuff i got

MEDIEVAL THINKERS

Medieval philosophy is characteristically theological: with the possible exceptions of Avicenna and Averroes, medieval thinkers did not consider themselves philosophers at all. Their concerns are theological: for them, the philosophers were the ancient pagan writers such as Plato and Aristotle. However, the theological works of medieval writers use the ideas and logical techniques of the ancient philosophers to address difficult theological questions, and points of doctrine. Thomas Aquinas, following Peter Damian, argued that philosophy is the handmaiden of theology (ancilla theologiae).

The three principles that underlie all their work are the use of logic, dialectic and analysis to discover the truth, known as ratio, respect for the insights of ancient philosophers, particularly Aristotle, and deference to their authority (auctoritas); and the obligation to co-ordinate the insights of philosophy with theological teaching and revelation (concordia).

One of the most heavily debated topics of the period was that of faith versus reason. Avicenna and Averroes both leaned more on the side of reason. Augustine said that he would never allow his philosophical investigations to go beyond the authority of God. Anselm attempted to defend against what he saw as partly an assault on faith, with an approach allowing for both faith and reason. The Augustinian solution to the faith/reason problem is to (1) believe, and then (2) seek to understand.

The opening for the show is December 11th and many of the artists will be in attendance AND there will be rare books, mini comics and zines by the exhibiting artists for sale AND Zak Sally and Mark Pickerel will be making a racket!!

Special thanks to all the participating artists, Fantagraphics Books and Larry Reid for guidance and attitude and Alexa Koenings for killing it on the postcard, which she did while on vacation!

Oh, and a big fuck you to that one guy who did everything in his power to sabotage our show. Next time bring your lunch.

Fantagraphics Bookstore Marks 4th Anniversary on December 11 with Festive Holiday Gala Featuring Music, Art, Comix and More!

November 29, 2010 – Seattle, WA. Since opening in December 2006, Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery has become a treasured civic asset. In addition to feeding Northwest residents’ insatiable appetite for challenging contemporary culture, the space has attracted visitors from across the country and around the world. Saturday, December 11 marks the bookstore’s 4th anniversary, and to celebrate the occasion we’re once again hosting the season’s most festive party featuring amazing music, comix, art, and more!

The evening includes solo music sets by Zak Sally and Mark Pickerel. Zak was a founding member of alternative music legends Low and continues solo music endeavors while publishing great comics with Fantagraphics as well as producing exquisitely crafted small press projects on his own La Mano 21 imprint. This event will mark the debut of his ambitious Kim Deitch File portfolio project, among other recent La Mano offerings. Zak will be joined by Fantagraphics friend Mark Pickerel, who began his musical career with the highly acclaimed Screaming Trees and now fronts Mark Pickerel’s Praying Hands, in addition to being the proprietor of Seattle pop culture emporium Damaged Goods.

An exhibition of comix art curated by Jason T. Miles and Max Clotfelter, in association with Friends of the Nib, features promising emerging cartoonists. together with masters of the medium. “Medieval Thinkers” includes original works by Peter Bagge, Bruce Bickford, D. J. Bryant, Chris Cilla, Max Clotfelter, Eleanor Davis, Kim Deitch, Heidi Estey, Kelly Froh, Justin Green, Gerald Jablonski, Megan Kelso, Jason T. Miles, Nate Neal, Bob Rini, Zak Sally, Dash Shaw, Matt Tamaru, Drew Weing, Jim Woodring, Mary Woodring, Max Woodring, Martine Workman, and Chris Wright. According to Friends of the Nib co-curator Miles, “Many of these artists work with antiquated materials most commonly associated with 19th and 20th century cartooning, specifically the metal dip pen or crowquill pen nibs, although use of these tools was not a requisite for inclusion. What brings these artists together is an imagist approach to picture-making and a willful ignorance of the aesthetics, fashion, and politics of the fine art industry. Medieval thinkers organize their experience by executing lessons in perspective, balance, humor and alchemy.”

All this plus screaming deals on comix, celebrity guests, holiday libations, demented Christmas platters spun by DJ Russ Fallout, and a few surprises makes Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery’s 4th anniversary party the place to be on Saturday, December 11. This event coincides with the colorful holiday version of the Georgetown Art Attack with amazing visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic arts community.

I'm proud to announce that Profanity Hill is a part of the Larry Reid curated show: Counterculture Comix: A 30 Year Survey of Seattle Alternative Cartoonists.

From what I spied, all the art shows at this year's Bumbleshoot (that's what my Grandpa call's it) are worth checking out. And if you don't want to drop the coin then Friday 9/3 is your day because that's the day when all the Bummershoot art show's are free to the public from 12PM to 7.

Here's what I wrote for the show wall:

My name is Jason T. Miles and I make zines. Growing up in Seattle during the ‘90s, I became aware of zines (and more!) thanks to local area cultural bureaus Fallout (RIP) and Confounded Books (RIP). As 2009 became 2010 I decided to start a Seattle area zine distro because I was tired of hearing myself complain about the lack of zine visibility in Seattle. The name Profanity Hill comes from and is a tribute to the book by Irene Burns Miller, which was published in Everett by Working Press in 1979 (the year I was born! It’s a great book! I highly recommend it!). Profanity Hill is also one of the many nicknames for Yesler Way… but I digress. The goal of MY Profanity Hill is to offer a portrait, marketplace and gateway for Seattle’s zine community, old and new. Go to www.profanityhill.blogspot.com and you will find vital and urgent zines from 1980 to the present.

John Porcellino and Noah Van Sciver 8/30 ZAPP Event

Zine and Mini-Comic luminaries, John Porcellino and Noah Van Sciver will be presenting, reading and Q&Aing at ZAPP this Monday, 8/30 from 7PM to 9.

John Porcellino has to be the most prominent and influential zinester next to Aaron Cometbus. His zine King-Cat (71 issues to date!) is like nothing else. I don't know how he does it. Many years ago when I was living in Olympia, someone handed me a stack of King-Cat's and... everything changed. I consider John P's example to be one of the most positive influences on my life and I'm proud to say we're La Mano 21 label mates! Also, I must mention that during the 90s John P ran Spit and a Half, which he closed down just as I was starting to make zines and mini-comics. I would hear about Spit and Half all time and would get frustrated that it was no more. Eventually I become so frustrated (not just by this but other stuff as well) that I decided to start Profanity Hill. Anyway, the good news is that John P has receently relaunched Spit and a Half, so you can now quit yer cryin. I could go on and on...

Noah Van Sciver and his zine Blammo are also like nothing else... or rather, like John P, Noah is like everyone else but he's not afraid to say it! He's prolific and his work is uncomfortable, unflinchingly honest, from hunger, desperate and essential.

I highly recommend you check this out!
